Our Story: Bringing Hybrid Dum Biryani to Calgary, Alberta
The Biryani Room was founded by Prasad, also known as @thebiryanimann on Instagram — a food entrepreneur and passionate chef driven by a love of biryani that, in his own words, "survived immigration." His vision was bold: take the bold Hyderabadi masala of South India and the flavour-soaked, potato-laced traditions of Kolkata biryani, and evolve them into something distinctly new for Calgary's food scene.
In 2025, Prasad opened The Biryani Room at 412 Memorial Drive NE — Calgary's first Hybrid Biryani concept restaurant. After launching a single hyper-local Instagram campaign, the restaurant sold out of 50 biryanis per day within its very first week of business, a strong signal of community demand from Bridgeland, Crescent Heights, Renfrew, Mayland Heights and surrounding Calgary NE neighbourhoods.
The interior is described by food bloggers and visitors as beautiful, moody, and thoughtfully designed — a dimly lit, aesthetically curated space perfect for an immersive dining experience. The restaurant is fully halal-certified and serves no alcohol, making it a welcoming destination for the broader South Asian Muslim and halal-conscious community in Calgary. The Biryani Room has quickly garnered attention as a standout new addition to Calgary's South Asian dining scene, regularly selling out of biryanis on busy evenings.
At The Biryani Room, we make biryani the right way — layered, sealed, slow-cooked dum style. Bold Hyderabadi masala meets the deeply aromatic flavour profile of Kolkata. Not fusion. Evolution.
